Then and Now
Information for prospective and current members.
Phi Sigma was founded in 1878 by six young men in the Chicago area who
were dedicated to the love of wisdom. They decided to present
papers/programs to each other monthly. The group soon grew to include
women, and over the years became centered in Oak Park/River Forest. In
2011, Phi Sigma entered an arrangement with Columbia College Chicago to
hold and digitize its extensive and historic archival materials. Scholars world-
wide have been able to access these records digitally ever since. Follow this

Phi Sigma meetings are held in members’ homes, as this contributes to an
atmosphere of sharing and camaraderie.
Members are encouraged to attend meetings and all active members pay
dues (By-Laws, Section D) to cover administrative costs and defray the
cost of our knowledge explorations, including the May party/outing.
Currently, dues are $25.00/person.
All members are urged to read the Phi Sigma Constitution, By-Laws,
Procedures, description of The Voice, and other documentation included
in each years’ program book. Copies are available to prospective
members.
Meetings/presentations are held from October through April on the second
Friday of the month beginning promptly at 7:30 pm, with the May
party/outing held the second Saturday in May. January and February
meetings are currently on Zoom due to weather concerns and to provide
the opportunity to maintain contact with our Honorary and Non-Resident
Members.
All members are expected to be active in Phi Sigma. In keeping with our
mission, members have opportunities to contribute in many ways that
highlight their talents and sensibilities, and exhibit their love of wisdom.
